When one arrives at Kardamyli, he encounters a small, laid back fishing village which is about an hour's drive from Kalamata (where Freediving Club Greece is based). Behind the image of this graphic village there is a long history though, as it was initially mentioned in Homer's Iliad in 1200BC, being the port of - made famous by the movie 300 - Sparta.

Alchemy freediving creator Daan Verhoeven visited Kardamyli and, guess what, he managed to find its famous underwater caves and film them while kicking his V3 carbon fins. In his own words:

"For a lot of people what we are about to do here is the stuff of nightmares! I mean, swimming down the height of a six-storey tower block is already madness. Not being able to turn around and go into a dark and narrow cave where there's no air, no light, no space?  Yeah I can see a point! I used to be afraid of the dark, yet to me this is a dream. You see, underwater you can fly. Water frees you of gravity, darkness frees you of sight, allowing the other senses to fly. I'm still not a fan of narrow spaces but underwater they become a challenge daring you to pilot through them. That combination of deep, dark and narrow has turned that fear into love. My father said that passions are often based on fears that we've overcome".
