Alchemy Pro - Choose Life

Irvine Welsh said in Trainspotting: “Choose a life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a f****** big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers... Choose DIY and wondering who the f*** you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit crushing game shows, stucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away in the end of it all, p****** your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, f***** up brats you spawned to replace yourself, choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?”Everything today seems out of focus. Modern living at times feels like some type of epidemic. Don't fall for it. Choose life. Sayuri Kinoshita Freediving To 94m

Sayuri Kinoshita was one of Japan's leading female freedivers and a graceful world record owner. Unfortunately, due to a non freediving accident, she passed away last summer. The guys from Vertical Blue just released her 94m FIM dive during 2018 where Kinoshita broke the Free Immersion women’s world record. Here's what the had to say about Sayuri "Sayuri Kinoshita of Japan offered several amazing performances at #VB2018 and this was just one of the World Records she set during that event. Sayuri is recognized the world over as the epitome of grace, good humor and strength in our sport. What's even more impressive is that during #VB2018 Sayuri was stoically managing a damaged sciatic nerve and still managed to secure a white card, a personal best, a national record or a world record on every single dive she completed. Freediving With A Blue Shark

Blue Sharks are cool! They live throughout the world's oceans, migrating from warm to cold seas and being truly pelagic, they spend their time hunting far from the coast. They feed of small fish and squid and can grow up to 3m in length. They also are highly qualified "surfers" as they use their pectoral fins to ride currents, therefore saving energy when covering long distances. What Is The Connection Between Alchemy And The European Space Agency

Innovation is most of the times linked to the development and adaptation of new technologies. Over the last couple of decades, we’ve witnessed the way digital technology has transformed our lives. Music streaming has disrupted the record business and social media has radically shifted the advertising and mass media sectors. What about freediving and spearfishing though? Composite tech has come a long way since its very begining during the 1990s, but it has, more or less, stayed the same when it comes to underwater equipment. For us there is only one way - innovate and do it constantly.  Come 2020, a space material company teamed up with a market leader in the design and production of free-diving and spear-fishing equipment through European Space Agency's Technology Transfer and Patent Office. Here's a sneek peak to what the future holds for the world's leading carbon fins. Want to know more about our fins?

Throwback To Fatima Korok's -81m FIM Dive

Free Immersion, a favorite discipline among many freedivers. For the newbies who are not aware what FIM is,  "in Free Immersion, the freediver is allowed to use the rope for both the descent and ascent, but must keep the same weight throughout the dive and cannot use fins to assist them. Despite the emphasis on the small muscle groups of the upper body, the advantage of using the rope mean that FIM dives are usually almost as deep as CWT. Divers will usually pull down to between 20 and 25m on the descent and then freefall the rest of the way to the bottom using their negative buoyancy".  Watch Alchemy freediver Fatima Korok bag a National Record for Hungary, diving down to a staggering -81m during the last Aida World Depth Championships in France. Stig Pryds Freediving At The El Bells

One of our favorite underwater content creators, Daan Verhoeven, just released a remixed video, based on one of his classics. Filming freediver Stig Pryds at the El Bells in Dahab, Daan captures some sublime shots of him freefalling through the majestic landscape. In his very own words "2 years ago Stig Pryds and i filmed a sort of underwater wingsuit proximity flight thing. It was the first time i had more than a few hours to shoot a video; we filmed every day after his training for more than a week, so i had lots of coverage. As you can imagine, a lot of footage ended up on the editing room floor, so to speak. I went over that footage the other day, and fell the thrill of filming it again, that wonderful feeling of seeing an idea come to life, and the awe for the insane skill Stig displays. I'd just heard a great song on a site where i find the music for the videos i make, and i felt like spending another week with this idea, coming at it from another angle - all other angles! So here it is, my first remix - hope you enjoy". Watch the original video! How To Restore And Polish Your Carbon Fins In 10 Easy Steps

You've just bought your new carbon fins, took them for a dive, but then you stored them wet under the beach towel on a hot day! Guess what, by the next day some terrible white marks will appear. Don't worry though, we've got you covered. White marks develop on carbon fins for a number of reasons. The most common one is due to wrong storage and bad handling. Here's what you can do to get rid of them, in 10 easy steps. 1. Wash them well with cold water and soap. Make sure you don’t use the “rough” part of the sponge. 2. Rinse them thoroughly and let them dry completely. 3. Remove the stickers using a razor blade scraper. 4. Be persistent, make sure they are completely glue-free. 5. Use 100% pure acetone - not nail polish remover - on a towel to clean them. 6. Rub and clean thoroughly both sides of the blade. 7. Wipe down with a clean cloth and let them dry. 8. Place new stickers. 9. Spray with silicone spray (i.e. car dashboard renovator). 10. Wipe down with a clean cloth. All done! Your carbon fins are as good as new! Lockdown Freediving

We all experienced some newly found emotions during lockdown, didn't we? Some countries, such as Italy, were hit very hard, some others were luckier. Most people stayed at home, social media networks worked overtime to accomodate users and businesses needed to go the extra mile in order to stay alive. What happened in the freediving sport though? Since most divers couldn't go to the sea, they spent their time dry training, exercising at home & creating content. Meet The People Behind Alchemy

Behind every innovative brand, one finds great people. If you think of an artist, you'll see him/her on stage, you'll check out the video clip, hear the song on the radio, but you will never get to see those who have worked behind the scenes in order to make that possible - the stage manager, the sound engineer, the marketeer, the song writer.Nicholas Kouvaras is one of these people for Alchemy. Having fell in love with the sea as a kid, Nicholas started freediving at an early age. Back then, he divided his time underwater between photography and spearfishing. He later discovered freediving and, as some do, dedicated his life to the sport. The time went on and he now has more than 40 years of freediving experience; the last 20 as a full time instructor and trainer. He has been involved, in one way or the other, in all aspects and forms of freediving, and even after 40 years underwater, he will always teach Level 1s, as sharing his passion has always been his primary motivation. Nicholas, being an avid lover of technology and especially composites, he found his home in the Alchemy R&D department, sharing knowledge and experience with the rest of the team. A 2nd place in CWT and 3rd in static earned him a place in the 1st Greek National team. 1998 He participated in the 1st Major World Championship in Sardegna with the National team. 1998 He attended the Apnea Academy Instructor course.

Freediving The Deepest Pool In The World

Enter the world's deepest freediving pool; Italy's Y-40. Just half an hour away from Venice, Y-40 is a diver's dream come true, as besides being the deepest, it is also the first and only facility with thermal water! Here's a sneak peek in one day of the life of Timo Niessner, freedive instructor and content creator, training in, well, heaven! Wanna know more about Y-40? Read On... The dream of a boy passionate about diving gives life to Y-40 The Deep Joy. Since the 1980s, the young Emanuele Boaretto shared with his father Giuseppe his first idea. An idea born in the family business, the Hotel Terme Millepini, where he thought to create a deep pool for free and scuba divers with Euganean thermal water, that would allow to practice underwater activities even in winter.A childhood dream he reconsidered around 2010, when the international crisis forced the Euganean Spas to make daring and far-sighted entrepreneurial choices in order to maintain the goals of tourist business. Baro Aspida - An Educational Book For Freedivers

Alchemy freediver Andy Babbage recently released his new book for freediving, Baro Aspida. In his own words:"After two years of working through a personal ongoing issue with pulmonary oedema and coming out the other side stronger and smarter, I was jubilant and also aware of what I had achieved. This book began in 2017 in Dahab, Egypt when I planned to document and share with close friends the finer details of my problems and solutions to pulmonary oedema. The content and purpose of the information grew and organically evolved into an educational piece. I decided to compile my story and other expert advice for the benefit of the freediving world.Baro-Aspida is an integration of personal experiences, podcasts, philosophies, scientific studies and voices from world-class freediving athletes on pulmonary oedema or as commonly known in the freediving community as a ‘squeeze’. Baro-Aspida intends to help shield new comers and guide freediving athletes with the wide array of issues concerning pulmonary oedema. An informed and strategic freediver raises their game in search of their dynamic utmost potential.Discussions include: different origins, potential causes, and practical strategies for deep diving freedivers to overcome pulmonary oedema; from prevention to recovery to working around a particular case". Spearfishing Dusky Groupers In The Mediterranean

When Mediterranean spearos go out to hunt, there is one species that is always worth the hassle - Dusky Grouper aka Epinephelus Marginatus! Duskies can get quite large and like living around rock formations, hidden most of the time in deep holes, coming out only to eat during early in the morning or late afternoon. Top 10 Freediving Spots All Around The World

Which are the 10 best freediving spots around the world? Being one of the leading freediving photographers in the game, Alchemy partner Daan Verhoeven has travelled around a few (!) spots. Here's the list of his favorite locations, in no particular order! "My name is Daan Verhoeven, I'm a freediving cameraman and I'm often asked which are your favorite locations to freedive. Well one of them is here at Cornwall, in the UK. In that sea you can swim with blue sharks! Now, blue sharks are great to dive with. Not only are they intensely blue and beautiful, they're also a little bit less shy than other sharks, so it's easier to approach them, easier to get a little bit closer to them, and so you can actually swim with them, rather than them swimming away from you. Also in Cornwall, are seals, both common seals and Atlantic grey seals. They have colonies around here, you can find them around all year. What's nice about seals is that you can really connect with them and once you've gained that trust, they can be very playful. I also love the caves and gullies around here. You'll see in this video that caves and wrecks are a bit of a theme in my love for freediving. I don't like tight spaces on land but for some reason in water I want to see if I can wriggle through. This is my Top 10 freediving spots! There's no real order to them, in that I don't love one more than I love the other. They are such different locations, so I figured I'd go through them geographically. (1) Ibiza Ibiza is known as a bit of a party island, and it certainly can be, but the sea is also really good for freediving. The reason I picked it as one of my top spots though, is that I fell in love with a cave there, yes, with a cave! Ibiza's got a cave of light and it's mind-blowing beautiful. That entry, the shaft of light at the right time of day, the darkness in the back. It's so thrilling. From Ibiza we go to... (2) Italy Italy has some gorgeous sea and Sardinia might be the most blue that I've ever seen, but I want to go to Italy for a pool. I know it's weird traveling for a pool, but Y40 is not a normal pool. It is the deepest pool in the world at 40 metres and the water is 30 degrees so you can dive without a suit on. At some point in your life you have to experience freefall this way, it's delicious! Plus the people who run it are freedivers, are really nice and if you're lucky you can stay at the hotel; they have great food and wiine. (3)Greece Kalamata! That bay is lovely and about a 30-minute drive from there is a place called Kardamyli. Again, caves, really good caves. I did one of my scariest, narrowest dives there and came out giggling like a madman. I literally had to crawl through there, scraping my camera over the bottom. I loved, loved, loved it! From there it's only a short way to... (4) Cyprus That Island has a lot going for it, some of the clearest waters I've ever seen, we've had visibility of 50 metres, enough to give you vertigo! A generally calm sea, caves, but also some spectacular wrecks. My favourite wreck in the world is the Zenobia, which starts at 20 meters deep and you can go in there. It scares me every time and it's just so exciting! And I love how it just goes on and on and on, it's more than a hundred and seventy meters long, plus you can find quite friendly turtles in Cyprus and fantastic food. (5) Dahab You can't discuss the freediving spots without mentioning the original Mecca! Yes, obviously, the famous Blue Hole is fantastic to train in and very beautiful, but also around there is the Saddle - full of lively coral and fish, El Bells - with its very cool little stream swim through at 27 meters, Canyon - a crack in the floor, 20 meters deep, that goes all the way down to,  well, the bottom! You can visit the eels at Eel Garden and the elephant in the bay, etc. Dahab has lots to offer, just be careful of the yalla yalla. (6) Indonesia That's a mother of a flight from Europe but it's well worth it. Bali is such a great place to visit; amazing food, super nice people, the water there has a soft golden quality. There are some fun wrecks where you can play and year-round possibilities to train. When you're in that area you'd be crazy not to visit Gili Trawangan or the other Gili islands. They are like little bubbles of heaven, no motorized traffic, all the peace and love and food and diving you could want! I spent a week there and all I did was eat sleep and dive. It was pure bliss! (7) Mexico, Yucatan province. There you find the cenotes; a natural phenomenon where crystal-clear waters meet sea waters, meet caves, meet rivers, meet everything! If you'd ask an artist to combine everything that water can be and distribute it over a relatively compact area ,you get cenotes. Some are massive, some are tiny, some drenched in sunshine, some are hidden in darkness, some are fresh but then salty, some are gardens, some are forests, and all of them are magical and fantastic in their own way. (8) Dean's Blue Hole If there was a god and she had put her finger down to create the perfect freediving spot, Dean's Blue Hole would be it! It lays 20 meters of a white beach, it's protected by cliffs most of the way around and by a reef the rest of the way, so you get no currents, no wind chop, no thermocline, just 200 meters of perfect depth. For me as a cameraman, I couldn't ask for a better backdrop for depth competitions. It is gorgeous from all angles, especially when you go to a key spot and you get that massive overview. (9) Dominica. The bay of Soufriere is in a caldera, let's say a crater of a volcano and is protected from all sides. It's deep, there's barely any current, it's warm! What I love about it most, it is lively, the whole island is green and even the sea is bubbling, full of life. All the fish live there, all of them. You can play with them, swim through them. If you get a bit tired from training, you can go to a waterfall and get energized there, or lay in a hot spring. Dominica will recharge your battery like nothing else. (10) UK We've seen seas and oceans, pools and rivers, but we haven't seen a lake or quarry yet! There's a quarry called NDAC and it's like a playground for freedivers. You can go up and down, yes, but also play in a bus or plane, or tunnels! It's a former chalk quarry so the water is quite clear and it has this beautiful greenish blue color. It has this weird quality of being both manmade and natural at the same time -  there's something quite spooky & fun about that.Obviously I've missed a lot of spots in this video, I haven't been everywhere and I'd love to explore Asia more, and I'd love to go to South America more, and North America and Antarctica and Australia! So if you have any of your favorite spots you'd like to recommend, leave them in the comments and hopefully next year I'll be able to visit them"! How To Avoid A Shark Attack When Spearfishing Or Freediving

Is there a way to avoid a shark attack when spearfishing or freediving? Alchemy spearo & freediving instructor Garrett Moss, a very experienced diver in the shark infested waters of Hawaii, explains in glorious detail what to do in case you are confronted by a shark when spearfishing or freediving. Should one fear the shark? Should one swim away? When should one get out of the water? What can one do when met by a group of sharks? Read on. "If you come across a shark, any species of shark, you're either going to be viewed as a predator to that shark or you're gonna be viewed as prey, so you make your choice on what you want that shark to view you as. If the shark starts swimming towards you and you know that you or anyone else around you can't get out of the water, you stand your ground. You let that shark know that you're confident, you don't show any fear. Sometimes you might want to even swim towards the shark. Every shark has its own personality and every species of shark behaves maybe a little bit more aggressive or less aggressive than others. When you come across the shark just try to figure out:  what species it is if it's aggressive how threatening the shark may be to you how big the shark is how small the shark is the posture of its pectoral fins the way that it's moving around the water Is it curious, is it hungry, is it being aggressive, is it being passive? These are things that you're going to be wanting to look at if you come in contact and you are in the vicinity of a shark. Just because a shark might come into the area where you're in the water, it doesn't mean that you have to get out of the water right away. Whether you're snorkelling, freediving on a competitive freedive line or you're hunting, maybe with some chum in the water, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to exit the water right away. If there are sharks in the vicinity, they are not going to come up and bite you right away. Most of the time most sharks are gonna study you and make sure that you're not a threat. If you want to pose a little bit of a threat to the shark, you show it confidence and you stand your ground. Sharks are opportunity feeders and they're not going to want to be threatened. You stand your ground and that shark is gonna respect you, just like you respect the shark. You're a predator in the water with the shark, you're not prey to the shark. It's going to be curious not viewing you as prey, but it's going to be curious viewing you as a fellow predator and maybe thinking that it can snag a meal, especially if you're a spearfisherman and you have some fish in the water or chum. They have a very heightened sense of smell, so they're going to be smelling the scene out just like a dog would, to see if there's anything that they can scavenge off you. On the contrary, if you swim away from the shark, maybe to shore, in the direction of shore or the direction of a flow or of the boat that you're diving off, and you swim across the surface of the water creating bubbles, you're going to get it curious. They can think of you as prey and they could possibly take a bite out of you at that point, if it gets close enough.  If you're standing your ground and you're showing the shark confidence and it's still approaching you, and you might see that the shark is kind of aggressive, what I would recommend doing - especially if you have a speargun - is using that as a barrier in between you and the shark. The shark’s most sensitive areas are going to be: its nose, where it has tons and tons of receptors its gills You can extend the gun out, creating a barrier in between you and the shark, and if the shark’s going to swim close enough to the tip of the spear, it'll probably poke itself in the nose - if you have a gun pointing in the right direction - and it'll turn its direction. That will deter the shark away from you, making it think twice about coming back, because it didn't like the pain of what it felt. If you poke the shark once and it comes back again, and you poke it a couple more times, then you might want to consider getting out of the water, especially if there's more than one sharks around. Also, if there are a few sharks hunting in a pack, you might want to consider getting out of the water, because one of the sharks might get a little too aggressive. If one gets aggressive then the others will feed off of that initial shark’s aggressive energy and it'll be a domino effect. You definitely don't want to be caught in a situation like that, it could be very dangerous at that point, so once it gets to a certain point, you might want to think about getting out of the water.  When you're in this kind of a situation your senses are gonna be heightened, your consciousness and your awareness is going to be heightened to a point to where you've never felt before, especially if it's going to be a very intense situation. You're going to be able to think more clearly than you ever have.Your judgment is going to be your best judgment because you're gonna be in fear for your life at that point. As spearos or freedivers we have to be extremely focused on holding our breath, being in touch with ourself and being in touch with what the task is at hand.Sometimes that takes away our senses from our surrounding areas and when this happens you might have a shark that'll sneak up on you. You’ve got to remember, you're in their environment, they can maneuver within and out of the scene like you don't even see them, you might not even notice that they're there, but they can see you and they can swim up to you a lot faster than you think. So you always want to be aware what your surroundings are, always keeping an eye around, just to make sure a shark doesn't sneak up on you. Sometimes, if you're kicking against the current to find a certain spot where you want to drop on, it's always a good idea to dip your head down and look behind you as you're swimming scouring the area,  getting a 360 view of what's going around at that point, making sure that there's no sharks in the area. If you have caught a fish, it might be a good idea to let the fish swim away and have the shark’s attention focus on that fish instead of you, especially if they're getting quite aggressive and then you can focus on getting yourself out of the water and out of harm's way. On the island of Maui, Hawaii, where I hunt, we have a lot of tiger sharks. Those sharks are quite large, they range anywhere from usually around 8 to about 15 feet, so all the way up to about three meters long. These are big sharks and and they're the apex predators. When they show up in the ocean everything around notes, everything stops, time stops, they are majestic creatures and they for the most part will approach slow, especially if you have chum falling". Choose The Right Model Of Alchemy Carbon Fins - Infographic

Everyday we get a lot of questions via email, live chat or social media, by freedivers or spearos who don't know which pair of Alchemy fins to buy. Even though getting new carbon fins signals exciting days ahead, the procedure of actually choosing the right model - especially with all the available info online - can be daunting. Are the PROs suitable for spearfishing? Are the S30 up to the job for competing freedivers? Are the V330 Plus good for UW photography? Well, there is no better place to ask those questions than our customer service department. Just before you do though, please have a look at our new graphic chart illustrating the best use for each model of Alchemy fins, as we think that it will save you a lot of time thinking what to do and clear up the air! How does one though choose the right stiffness for the blades? Before we get into the stiffness of the blades, we're first going to start with the footpockets and choosing the right footpockets is not so much about selecting a certain brand it's more about finding what fits you best. You want a tight fit but you don't  want any discomfort and you certainly don't want any pain. By having a tight fit, we can maximize the transfer of energy down into the blades and it's going to give you more propulsion in the water. The foot pocket that you choose will determine which angle you have available and the angle that you have will determine how a certain stiffness of fin will feel in the water. Here at Alchemy we offer two different angles, we have the V3, S and V3PRO with 23 degrees and the V330, S30, V330PRO and V330 Plus with 30 degrees. The key difference between these two angles is that the increased angle of the V330 will make it feel like a certain stiffness of fin is softer than if we have the V3 and 23 degrees. Alchemy offers five different stiffnesses: soft, medium-soft, medium, medium-hard and hard. Soft Soft fins are great for smaller people, let's say in the 50 to 70 kilo range. The softer fin you're going to feel like you have less lactic acid build up as you are doing a deep dive and they're also going to be great for teaching and recreational purposes. Times when you're gonna be using the fins for long periods of time throughout the day and again you're gonna feel less wear and tear on your legs. Medium SoftMedium soft blades are great for slightly larger people, let's say 60 to 75 kilograms and because they're slightly harder, you're gonna feel a little more power and you're going to be able to move more quickly through the water. The downside is that you may feel a little more of wear and tear on your deepest dives so this is one consideration if you are one of the smaller people. They're a great all-purpose fin good for underwater photography, teaching, spearfishing and recreational purposes. MediumMedium stiffness fins are again for slightly larger people I would say from 70 kilo+ and they're gonna have all of the same benefits as the medium soft but they're also great for spearfishing because you have the extra power so if you're moving through current or using a thicker wetsuit and more lead then you're gonna have that extra power. Medium HardThe medium to hard, again this is for larger people, I would say guys at least 80 kilograms maybe even more. Great for spearfishing, maybe not so much for deeper dives but if you're hunting in the 20-30 meter range and you need that extra power especially when you're bringing up large fish or if you're propelling yourself through cold water again with heavy weights and thicker wetsuits. HardThe hard stiffness fins are for larger guys, let's say 100 kilos plus and for special conditions. The extra stiffness is gonna mean that you have more power available to you but it's not going to be great for deep performances. But however any times when we're pulling out large fish, maybe moving through cold water with extra buoyancy, extra weight and moving through a strong current you're gonna find that these work very well. The Benefits Of Joining A Freediving School

What is the best and safest way to learn how to freedive? In our opinion, that is by seeking out your nearest freediving instructor or school. Unlike many activities, freediving should not be learnt via the internet, as it is a very dangerous sport potentially and for this reason you need to do it under the supervision of someone who knows what they are doing. Which are the main benefits of attending a freediving school though? What will one be taught? How can one choose the best school? Jonathan Sunnex is one of the most prominent figures of modern freediving. Having been down to 110m (CWT), Johnny, as his friends call him, has taken part in many competitions around the world gaining multiple records, until he started organising his own, the Blue Element, in Dominica. Having coached athletes such as Sofia Gomez Uribe, who went on to become World Record & National Record holders, answers all the above questions in this insightful video. Three of the most important elements in freediving (and spearfishing) is equalization, safety & breathing. Alchemy S Carbon Spearfishing Fins - The New Video Just Landed

Before the birth of classical civilizations, human survival was dependent on the skill of hunting, where powerful men - and in some territories, also, women - held daily hunts to put food on the table for their families. From bones to skins, all materials obtained from the animals were used, and sometimes, items such as the skulls were kept, symbolizing the clan and determining the bravest. There weren't many options; hunt or starve to death. No sport, just survival. Fast forward a few hundred years later, we live in a world where almost anything can be purchased and every basic human need can be provided by a business. We don't like that. We prefer to catch our own dinner. Spearfishing Dog Tooth Tuna At Latham Island

Latham Island is a small, relatively isolated island in the Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania and is home to the biggest dogtooth tuna ever caught by spearfishing! Alchemy spearo and adventure guide David Ochoa was recently out there spearfishing with a group of clients as the island from September up to March is the top location for hunting giant Doggies! Here's what he had to say about it: "One of my coolest angles on @fawazalnuaimi shooting a dog tooth tuna on a scooter. Was pretty interesting to see how fish reacted to this and also to explore some deep stuff... Spearfishing trips can be such a bonding experience! This was the first time I met this group and we instantly became very good friends. This story is not about shooting massive dog tooth tuna, wahoo or sailfish (even though there's plenty of it) this is a little film about everything else. All the good things that go way beyond shooting fish". Read More Articles About Spearfishing: Hunters, Aren't We All? Freedivers Evolving - The Bajau Laut Case

The deepest dive recorded by the free-diving Bajau Laut people of Southeast Asia was to an impressive 79 metres, and the longest time spent underwater by them was just over three minutes. Although the Bajau do not dive to these depths or for this length of time during their day-to-day fishing, they spend up to 60% of their working life underwater... An international team of researchers studied the Bajau and found they had significantly larger spleens than the people of a neighbouring village who primarily farm rather than fish for their food. This was true even for members of the Bajau community that don’t dive, suggesting that it is an inherited trait rather than a change in individuals caused by a lifetime of diving... Freediving And Filming In The Cenotes

Cenotes are natural swimming holes or swimming caves in Mexico. They’re formed by the collapse of porous limestone bedrock. When the rock falls it reveals a secret subterranean world of groundwater pools! Most cave cenotes have fresh water that has been filtered by the earth. This makes the water super clear and pure. So clear in fact that you can often see straight through to small fish darting about in the plants. Sofia Gomez Uribe Dreams Of Mermaids

Watch the new astonishing video by Alchemy partner Daan Verhoeven featuring Alchemy athletes Sofia Gomez Uribe & Alena Konecna. Daan writes on his Facebook page: " Back in November, I had this idea for a video about chasing your dreams. How reality is always different, and perhaps richer, than what we dream, but how dreams can shape our reality. I thought mermaids were a good example of a dream, and monofins of reality. Since i happened to be in a place where there were two world record holding amazing women who could actually do what i was dreaming up, i asked Sofia Gomez Uribe and Alena Konecna if they would be the dreamer and the mermaid. They kindly played along with my dream and were perfect. Then i heard Bruno Bavota's new album 'Get lost', and the track '(dis)connected' enchanted me, so i asked him if he'd help realise this dream - and amazingly, he did. So this silly little dream i had became a reality, and what better day than Sofi's birthday to publish it? Freediving The Sacred Cenotes In Mexico

A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings. In 2001–2002 expeditions led by Arturo H. González and Carmen Rojas Sandoval in the Yucatán discovered three human skeletons; one of them, Eve of Naharon, was carbon-dated to be 13,600 years old. In March 2008, three members of the Proyecto Espeleológico de Tulum and Global Underwater Explorers dive team, Alex Alvarez, Franco Attolini, and Alberto Nava, explored a section of Sistema Aktun Hu known as the pit Hoyo Negro. At a depth of 57 m the divers located the remains of a mastodon and a human skull that might be the oldest evidence of human habitation in the region. The Yucatán Peninsula has almost no rivers and only a few lakes, and those are often marshy. The widely distributed cenotes are the only perennial source of potable water and have long been the principal sources of water in much of the region. Major Maya settlements required access to adequate water supplies, and therefore cities, including the famous Chichen Itza, were built around these natural wells. Some cenotes like the Sacred Cenote in Chichen Itza played an important role in Maya rites. Believing that these pools were gateways to the afterlife, the Maya sometimes threw valuable items into them. The discovery of golden sacrificial artifacts in some cenotes led to the archaeological exploration of most cenotes in the first part of the 20th century. Edward Herbert Thompson, an American diplomat who had bought the Chichen Itza site, began dredging the Sacred Cenote there in 1904. He discovered human skeletons and sacrificial objects confirming a local legend, the Cult of the Cenote, involving human sacrifice to the rain god Chaac by ritual casting of victims and objects into the cenote. Follow photographer Alex Voyer & Marianne to their recent trip at Yucatan and experience Mexico's dark & magical cenotes through this magnificent video. Underwater Photography - Tips From The Pros

Alchemy partners Daan Verhoeven & Carlos Negrete share their tips for UW photography through the latest post of Freedive Wire. Daan is a freediving photographer that needs very little introduction. He has photographed almost all AIDA world championships since 2012. Daan was kind enough to give us his top tips for the following topics on freediving photography. 1. Shutter Speed and Fast Moving Objects If you want everything to be crisp, the slowest shutter speed you can use is 1/320th. You can get away with 1/250th but in the no fins categories, the tips of the fingers will have motion blur. I like to do slow shutter speeds like 1/15th or 1/10th on fast moving freedivers and follow them, so you can blur the background and convey a sense of speed. 2. Aperture, Depth of Field and Split Shots It depends on what you’d like to achieve and on your lens/camera set up; if you want everything to be in focus, both above and below the surface, you have to go with f8 or higher. I tell the camera to focus above the surface, as it focuses too close by underneath the surface for things above to be in focus. Use plenty of spit on your dome, then dip it just before taking the shot, in order to minimize drops on your dome. Read more on Freedive Wire. Alchemy S Carbon Spearfishing Fins - Full Force

Have you ever been spearfishing around oil platforms? On the surface, offshore oil rigs are a complete eyesore, but underwater they can be an aquatic paradise for sea creatures. Stretching hundreds of feet from the ocean floor and towering far above the surface—some reaching heights as tall as the Empire State Building—these metal platforms used for oil drilling have taken on a surprisingly different purpose over the years: serving as manmade reefs for coral, sponges, algae, red snapper, jacks, angel fish, barracuda and other marine species. If you ever find yourself around the Florida Keys, try and book a trip with Captain Aaron Young and he will make sure to take you to some of the hottest diving spots around. A Message From Team Alchemy

Dear reader, Being in quarantine isn't easy for a freediver nor for a spearo. We all enjoy being out at sea, or even better, deep at sea. Sure, no-one would had guessed a few months ago that such a thing would occur. However, as we stand together against a common enemy, each and everyone of us should do his/her part to slow the spread of Covid-19. As governments around the world are implementing measures to contain this public health crisis, we need to offer our full support & help to those in need. As a leading company in its sector, we have been taking strict precautions to protect our colleagues and their families, while securing immaculate customer service. Our sites around the world are fully operational, and our production and delivery secured. Furthermore, we have extensive contingency plans in place securing our supply chain and ongoing business. This won’t last forever, be patient for a month or two and it will soon be over. Stay at home, enjoy quality time with your kids and your partner, exercise, eat well, sleep even better, read books, FaceTime friends & family, discover new apps, maybe even work on your photo/video editing skills! Make the most of your time and before you know it you’ll be back at sea. Stay safe. Much love,
Team Alchemy

An Inside View To Being A Safety Freediver

Alchemy Athlete & Blue element organiser Jonathan Sunnex writes: "The Alchemy Blue Element safety team is comprised of experienced, high level freedivers and freediving instructors, many of whom could be competing in their own rights(at least three of which dive to more than 90m!). Instead they choose to look after the best interests of others and create an atmosphere conducive to success. With an atmosphere unlike any other freediving competition the athletes suffered only one black out in 130 performances, testament to our team and conditions in Soufriere bay. Alchemy S Carbon Spearfishing Fins Enter Hawaii

"Spearfishing is arguably one of the most ancient and environmentally friendly forms of fishing. Being an old fishing technique may have you thinking that it’s not as effective as other fishing techniques, but in fact, it’s one of the most fruitful techniques to this day. Hawaii has been recognized as a very popular destination for spearfisherman because of the diversity of fish there in terms of type and size. Not only that but for the liberal spearfishing laws. What does that mean? It means that you don’t need a license or a permit for recreational marine fishing. The only regulations that govern spearfishing in Hawaii are basically species and size restrictions". (source) If you are after hunting Uku, Ono and Dogtooth Tunas while listening to the sound of whales singing then it is definately worth a visit. Deep Canadian Freedivers

"The Great White North is not a place one normally associates with freediving. Yet, Canada has a reputable history in the sport with vanguards such as Mandy-Rae Krack, William Winram and Eric Fattah that produced early world records and contributed to technical development. As we look to a new decade and the next freediving season on the international circuit, we reflect on what was a hugely successful 2019 for Canadian freediving. As old records were broken and new ones set, there seems to be a veritable rise of new champions, seemingly a long time in the making as a new wave of Canadian athletes makes their mark on the competitive stage. New national records were set in both depth and pool in 2019. While it might be easy to attribute these to the new AIDA Constant Weight Bifins discipline, in fact, long-standing records in CWT and FIM were broken. New continental records were also established, making last year a pivotal one for Canada in the sport. Two athletes, in particular, made huge contributions by competing internationally across all four depth disciplines. To find out what it took to get there, I sat down with Sheena McNally of Alberta and Matthieu Duvault of Quebec to talk about their achievements and what it took to get there". Tailor made for spearfishing, it packs everything, in terms of performance & efficiency, into an advanced specialty. The new length (-3cm compared to V3) makes the blades a lot faster & easy to manoeuvre under any circumstances and the reinforced base of the blades offers maximum results for all diving styles. Following the V3 model, their shape fits Pathos footpockets with an angle of 23 degrees. We kept the extraordinary mirror finish on the blades' front side and matte finish on the back. Serial number tag is now embedded into the blade's lamination ensuring the authenticity of your genuine alchemy product along with a hologram tamper-proof individually numbered tag on your warranty certificate document. NEW COLOR COMBINATIONS Having the first worldwide innovative design of coloured silicone water-rails, we decided to offer more. Alchemy S blades come with an extra unique colour, never seen before in the alchemy pallete; Tuna Blue Metallic. The previous colour variations, are also available. In other words, we offer all it takes for you to be in constant love with your equipment. CONSTRUCTION Alchemy S Carbon Fiber Blades offer a new revolutionary design with 11 (eleven) Carbon Fiber layers for ultimate energy transferring and top performance. They are manufactured in compliance with the most demanding and modern standards in constant ambient temperature and humidity. 40 tons of total pressure combined with vacuum assistance (VRTM) and 12 hours post curing in temperatures controlled through PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) with a deviation of less than ± 0,1°C. BLADE ENDING SHAPE Alchemy S Carbon Fiber blades are manufactured ending in a dolphin tail shape (D.Tail). This shape gives the best results based on hydrodynamics studies (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute / T. Wei) and tests made in C.F.D. software (Computational Fluid Dynamics). The dolphin tail shaped ending gives the maximum thrust with the least possible energy consumption. WATER RAILS In each alchemy S Carbon Fiber blade, there are specially designed water rails made of 100% silicone. The design was made in a three-dimensional (3D) CAD environment and produced in United Kingdom by a high end silicone production facility. Trials and studies in C.F.D. software showed that this water rail detains and drives the water on the blade without losing its shape even in the toughest conditions. The fact that even in the limit bend of the blade, the water rail retains its shape, drives the water from the beginning of the stroke and provides immediate response to the diver's moves. Alchemy water rails offer hydrodynamic design and the absolute superiority of silicone to common rubber on strength, original shape maintenance and strength under extreme conditions. 5 YEAR WARRANTY Alchemy S Carbon Fiber Blades are provided with a written warranty of five (5) years from the day of manufacturing. New National Record For Alchemy Athlete Neza Jeranko

Neza Jeranko just made a new 137m NR for Slovenia in DYN-BF. Here's what she had to say about it. "Just finished with the first pool competition of the year with 137m bifins dive, which is less than I expected, but it turns out it was enough for a new AIDA national record. It’s not a secret that I am way more comfortable in depth than in the pool, but I don’t believe in sticking to what you’re good at. I believe in working hard even at things that don’t come easy to you. But I couldn’t have done it without two people: my best strength trainer @likarklavdija who keeps killing me with my gym workouts and my dear @samojeranko who made me swim way too many lengths this season. Freediving Depth Wish

"January 2013 was a turning point in my life! Upon spending 5 years in an inferno of pain and strong medication caused by psoriatic arthritis, I found that freediving was my path to a fighting and fantastic version of myself. I transformed from a damned cripple into a fantastic athlete who could show his kids and surroundings that where there is a will there is also a way. I found equanimity, self-worth and a positive outlook on life with my new sport. I never would have discovered my exceptional gift for freediving had it not been for my damn arthritic condition. That alone has changed my world view from a perspective of limitation to a view of endless potential"! Alchemy PRO Carbon Fins - Safety In Freediving

One of the most important factors in freediving, or at sea in general, is safety. Safety is the state of being "safe", the condition of being protected from harm or other non-desirable outcomes. Safety can also refer to the control of recognized hazards in order to achieve an acceptable level of risk. Here's a video of Blue Element's safety team showcasing the new Alchemy PROs. New National Record For Canadian Freediver Sheena McNally

Alchemy athlete Sheena McNally just broke a 12 year old NR for Canada in CWT, diving to a staggering -89m. Here's what she wrote on her Instagram account: "I've been a bit quiet on social media as I've been working hard and trying to stay cool for #blueelement2019. But today I did something I want to share: I broke the Canadian record in CWT, which has stood for more than 12 years! This dive to 89m makes me the deepest Canadian self-powered woman and also the deepest in North America, which is just nuts, really. I knew I could do it when I first beat it in training earlier this year after a long time stuck with the monofin, but it has been a lot of hard work for me to get to the point where I could do it in a comp...I'm so stoked. I am sure I will have more to say later, but for now, time to rest, regroup, and have a think about what I want to do for the remainder of the comp! Thanks to my training buddies, especially Jon and Jimmy, and to @soufriereguesthouse for supporting my stay here in Dominica, as I simply couldn't have trained here without them. Thanks also to my freedive home base, @freediveutila (this is the beautiful logo on my monofin), for believing in me ages ago, before I did! @bikini_kiki for awesome coaching at the surface and to my family for always supporting me, and being cool with me doing this crazy thing! Alchemy V3-30 Carbon Freediving Fins Review

Find out why the Alchemy V3-30 freediving fins are at the top of our favourite equipment list!  15 layers of carbon fibre for strength and durability Laboratory tested for maximum hydrodynamic efficiency 33 degree total effective angle for a streamlined performance Bi-axial weave pattern of carbon fibres for reinforcement The foot-pocket must be properly sized and fit snug Ensure the stiffness chosen is suitable for activity and experience The environment Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada We tested Alchemy’s V3-30 carbon fibre freediving fins with the C4 “300” foot-pockets. Our testing ground was quite unusual to most freedivers: a Canadian glacial lake. Water temperatures at less than 6C degrees with strong thermoclines. In these conditions, a 7mm thick wetsuit is required for cold water freediving. Unfortunately, all this neoprene creates strong positive buoyancy. Therefore, a comfortable and powerful freediving fin is required for energy conservation in the first 20 meters. We put the Alchemy’s V3-30 to the test on propulsion and power output in these conditions. They are difficult freediving conditions, so ideal to test one of the top carbon freediving fins on the market. Cold water freediving tests We tested the following type of carbon freediving fins from Alchemy: Model: V3-30 Color: Red with White Water Rails Stiffness level: Medium/Soft Footpocket Type & Size: C4-300 (White) & 40/41 EU At 800mm long and 195mm wide, we found these dimensions to be ideal. Enough length to generate power, but not so long as to create too much drag. Suitable for Constant Weight (CWT-B) competition dives or deep spearfishing. Choosing the correct stiffness is very important to finding the right fin for you. Furthermore, the foot-pockets must to be sized correctly to ensure a snug fit. Keep reading to find out the details you must know before buying a pair! The carbon blades Bi-axial weave pattern This is a detailed design feature that makes Alchemy freediving fins stand out from other competitors. Also known as a satin weave, Alchemy designs using the bi-axial weave. Alchemy blades are created with fifteen layers of weaved carbon fibre. Furthermore, the axis of the layers of carbon are rotated fourteen times. What does this mean? This feature promotes a more durable blade, less likely to split and break along a singular axis. We’ve seen cheaper carbon fibre blade designs where the fibre layers have the same orientation. This design increases the likelihood of breaking and crack propagation. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding (VRTM) process Alchemy uses is at the top of its game. This manufacturing design helps to create a “near air void free” layout within the carbon fibre structure. With 45 tons of “total pressure” applied (i.e. P = F/A), the void ratio is highly reduced and resin voids are reduced as much as possible. This allows Alchemy to boast an impressive carbon fibre content of greater than 72%! The hard-tip The hard-tip that Alchemy employs in its design is a unique patented feature for carbon fins. The tip of the fin is stiffer relative to overall blade stiffness. This doesn’t create more resistance, but rather enhances the oscillating movement of the flexible foil in water. As a flexible foil, the blades bend in one direction, only to quickly bend in the other direction. This mechanism creates forward thrust and provides propulsion. This flexible foil, or the blade, thus oscillates back and forward. By designing a hard-tip with greater stiffness relative to the blade, you can better control the oscillating motion of the blade. This allows you to avoid stalling the blade, so you won’t waste any oxygen. Here’s some trivia for you; Skyscrapers use a similar concept known as “Tuned Mass Damper” (TMD). A heavy weight (usually concrete or steel) is mounted at the very top of the building. It’s usually isolated from the structure by the use of springs, pendulums or water. Earthquakes will cause the building to sway or oscillate in ways that can damage the structure. This heavy weight helps to “dampen” the oscillations of the building produced during an earthquake. In other words, it controls how the building will sway back and forth. We believe the hard-tip design plays a similar role in the V3-30 freediving fins. Other blade features we love The blade end that Alchemy designs for its V3-30 freediving fins is the dolphin tail shape. Based on fluid dynamics testing, this shape is considered one of the best for hydrodynamic efficiency. We also think that this shape could potentially help to reduce drag and turbulence at the end of the blade. Alchemy saved no expense on designing and testing the most efficient design of water rails. We like these water rails a bit better than those of the previously reviewed C4 Mustang Carbon Fins. These silicone water rails are tested using a fluid dynamics software. These tests ensure the the fluid retains laminar flow and reduces the turbulence. The rails retain their shape even under extreme bending. They have a low profile and ensure hydrodynamic flow over the blade. The V3-30 freediving fins are designed with an offset angle of 30 degrees. Additionally the footpockets are have their own internal angle of 3 degrees. This combines for a total effective angle of 33 degrees. This shape provides more leverage and better propulsion. It also allows the diver to be more streamlined in the freefall. The Footpockets How they fit This is where you’ll hear many freedivers swear the first few times they put the fins on. The footpockets are tricky. There’s a reason why Alchemy sells them with a shoe horn. You will also likely have to lube them (i.e. bio-degradable conditioner) or use silicone grease. We suggest you use the most environmentally conscious option if possible. Once they’re finally on, you will be happy at how well they fit and how comfortable they are. The footpockets remain comfortable after hours of wear. They cause minimal cramping if you’re wearing the correct size. Like most freediving fins, the footpockets run small. I usually wear 42 Euro and chose the 40-41 Euro size for these fns. The fit must be snug, but comfortable. The footpockets are made of a highly resistant material. C4 claims it is seven times stronger than regular rubber used in most footpockets. At 316 grams, they are some of the lightest footpockets on the market. You truly feel like you’re wearing nothing. In cold water Our cold water suggestion is similar for wearing a monofin as described in a previous article. We recommend you buy 5-6mm socks. Cut off the tips (at the toes) and put them on your feet prior to wearing the fins. Once your fins are on, simply pull them over the heel and cover the foot-pocket. This technique will allow you to wear this fins in very cold water while maintaining a snug and “sock-less” fit. Our recommendation Our only suggestion to C4 is to add some padding around the heel. Many freedivers tape the opening (by the heel) since the sharp edge can cut into your skin. After a long session of deep dives in cold water, you can feel some bruising by your heel. This won’t be as big of an issue in warm water because the rubber will be a bit more flexible. However, in cold water this can quite unpleasant, especially if you’re training multiple days in a row. Technical details about the V3-30 Manufacturing process: VRTM 15 Carbon fiber layers 14 axis of reinforcement Carbon fiber content: ≥72% Total length of the blade is 800 mm The blade’s total width is 195 mm Blade’s angle: 30° Angle type: Radius Warranty period: 5 (five) years from the day of manufacturing Source: The Freedive Wire Read More Articles About Luca Malaguti:Add This To Your Freediving Bucket List Are They Up For The Job? It’s believed that there are over 2 million lakes in Canada, 31,752 of which are larger than three square kilometres, with 561 of these lakes having a surface area larger than 100 square kilometres. In fact, over nine per cent of the country is covered by freshwater. That’s over 890,000 square kilometres! With so many lakes, it’s nearly impossible to decide which lakes are the best. But some of these lakes are much more spectacular than the others (source). Ever wondered how it would feel to freedive at one of Canada’s coldest lakes? Listen Close - A Freediving Approach To Life

Listen Close is the freediving brain-child of Timo Niessner; a non-profit-production which started 1,5 years ago as a brief thought. They wanted to show freediving and the philiosophy behind from a new perspective. Getting away from numbers, they focused on the experience to connect again with the purity of water. A connection which we tend to loose in a fast world full off rush and social expectations.
